DURÁN-CORRETJER ENDS THE LEX FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM BY WELCOMING THE LAST GROUP OF AMERICAN STUDENTS TO ANALYZE A NEW MATTER ON BRANDS
Last July 17, Durán-Corretjer ended the last session of THE LEX FELLOWSHIP program, welcoming a new group of American undergraduate students in its offices.
As during the sessions held last May and June, the experience was very positive given the high degree of participation of the students in the case, an aspect that undoubtedly allowed analyzing the case in an interactive and dynamic way.

MYANMAR PASSES A NEW TRADEMARK LAW
New trade mark law was enacted in Myanmar on 30 January 2019 and it is expected to be in force in the year 2020.
The main changes of the new law are the possibility for trade mark owners to register a trade mark on a first-to-file basis. Also, trade marks registered in Paris Convention Member States will benefit from a six-month priority period.
We will provide you with more details related to the new trade marks once the procedure and administrative bodies for the new system are in place.
CHRISTIAN DURÁN PARTICIPATES IN THE QUALITY CONTROL PROJECT OF THE EUIPO’S DECISIONS
During the days 3 to 5 of July, Christian Durán attended, as representative of ASIPI (Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property), the meeting that took place in the EUIPO on the quality control of decisions issued by said Office.
This project involves various user associations whose representatives analyze through the corresponding audits a sample of decisions adopted by EUIPO to assess whether they meet the quality criteria of the Office.
These meetings allow direct participation in the quality management system of EUIPO, contributing also to improve the quality of its decisions.
LUIS-ALFONSO DURÁN ELECTED MEMBER OF HONOUR OF ECTA
Last June 28th, the European Communities Trade Mark Association (ECTA) awarded our Managing Partner Luis-Alfonso Durán as Member of Honour of the Association during a gala dinner that took place in Edinburgh on occasion of the closing of its Annual Meeting.
Luis-Alfonso Durán was the first Spanish President of ECTA in the period 1998-2000, has been member of the Council since 1988 until 2018 and President of the Link Committee with EUIPO. He has also been a very active member of the Design Committee, of the Membership and Disciplinary Committee, of the Law Committee and of the Advisory Committee.
This is the first time in the history of ECTA that a Spaniard is elected Member of Honour.
DURÁN-CORRETJER AT THE ECTA ANNUAL-CONFERENCE IN EDINBURGH
Managing Partner, Luis-Alfonso Durán, and Attorney at Law and Spanish Patent and Trade Mark Attorney Christian Durán attended the 38th Annual Conference of the ECTA - European Communities Trade Mark Association (official) that took place in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, from June 26-29.
DURÁN-CORRETJER WELCOMES NEW AMERICAN STUDENTS OF THE LEX FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM TO ANALYZE A MATTER REGARDING TRADE MARKS
Last June 20, Durán-Corretjer once again hosted a group of American undergraduate students in its offices at THE LEX FELLOWSHIP.
The purpose of the program THE LEX FELLOWSHIP is to bring its participants to the practical reality of law in its different branches through visits to offices and analysis of practical cases.
As in the previous visit, students had the opportunity to see a case study on trade marks and then analyze it together with the lawyers of the firm. Thank you very much for your assistance.
POSSIBILITY OF REQUESTING NAMES OF DOMAIN WITH THE EXTENSION CODE ".madrid"
We inform you that from July 16, 2019 it will be possible to request domain names with the extension code ".madrid".
The requirements to apply for a domain name with this extension code will be to reside in the Community of Madrid or exercise occupational, personal, business or cultural activities with the Community, or have a direct or indirect link to the region. These activities or links must be demonstrated only in case of claim of domain names by third parties.
BRAZIL PREPARES TO ADHERE TO THE MADRID PROTOCOL FOR THE INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION OF TRADE MARKS
On May 30, the Federal Senate of Brazil published Legislative Decree No. 49/2019 approving the Madrid Protocol on the International Registration of Marks.
Through this accession, Brazil undertakes to examine the trade marks that designate said territory within a maximum period of 18 months, provided that third parties do not oppose its registration, an aspect that will undoubtedly speed up the processing of the trade marks and will benefit the undertakings interested in doing business in the country.
The Decree will now have to be approved by the President of the Republic and is expected to be implemented during October of this year 2019.
SPAIN WITHDRAWS FROM THE LONDON ACT, AND THE ADDITIONAL MONACO ACT OF THE HAGUE AGREEMENT CONCERNING THE INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGNS
In the Spanish Official Gazette of June 7, 2019 it has been published the withdrawal, notified by the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs to the WIPO Director General, of Spain, from the London Act and from the Additional Monaco Act of Hague Agreement concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs.
This withdrawal has effects as form October 18, 2016. From this date on, Spain is only bound with the Hague Agreement through the Geneva Act (1999).
