ENTRY INTO FORCE OF REGULATION (EU) 2023/2411 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL OF 18 OCTOBER 2023 ON THE PROTECTION OF GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS FOR CRAFT AND INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS
Wed, 14/01/2026 - 18:48
Since 1 December 2025, it has been possible to apply for EU registration of the names of craft and industrial products that meet the necessary requirements through a single application for a geographical indication (GI) covering all EU Member States.
There are two categories of names that can obtain protection as a GI:
• the names of the geographical area where the product is produced, or
• the names used in trade or in everyday language to describe or refer to a specific product in the relevant geographical area.
The examination and registration process will consist of a national phase and a European phase. Applicants will have to submit, among other documents, a specification defining the scope of protection of the geographical indication according to the quality, reputation, or other specific characteristics of the products linked to the place of production.
Producers of craft and industrial products identified by a registered GI will be able to use the official “protected geographical indication” symbol on their products. This logo will allow consumers to identify craft and industrial products with specific characteristics linked to their geographical origin, enabling them to make informed purchasing decisions.
While GI protection has long been available for agricultural products at the European Union level, identifying products such as Prosciutto di Parma and Champagne, there was no European GI protection for the names of artisanal and industrial products.
The entry into force of this Regulation represents a crucial step forward in protecting the names of artisanal and industrial products based on the authenticity and traditional skills of their regions. Some examples of products are Limoges porcelain, Solingen knives, Carrara marble and Madeira embroidery, among others.
